N’Djamena – Chadian rebels and army are fighting for a second day running in the capital N’Djamena. Army chief of Staff General Daoud Soumain was killed in the fighting. The rebels have surrounded the palace where President Idriss Déby is holding out. The president has reportedly rejected a French offer to take him to safety.
International aid organisations say there has been looting and many bodies are lying in the streets. It is not clear how many people have been killed. Thousands of people including foreigners are fleeing to neighbouring Cameroon.
French troops have evacuated some 400 French citizens and other foreigners. Around 600 foreigners are still waiting to leave.
