New York – The United Nations estimates that at least 700,000 Gaza residents, about half the area’s population, have crossed the border into Egypt to stock up on supplies. Palestinian militants set off explosions and destroyed several stretches of the border fence at the Rafah crossing on Tuesday night. Israel imposed a total blockade of the Gaza Strip last week in response to Palestinian rocket attacks against Israeli territory. The blockade has led to enormous shortages of food, fuel and medicines.
Jerusalem has called on Egypt to resume control of the border in order to prevent weapons smuggling; however Cairo has refused to take any action.
On Thursday, the UN Security Council again failed to agree on a compromise statement urging Israel to end its siege of the Gaza Strip and Palestinians to prevent rocket attacks against Israel. The Security Council is meeting again today.
