Paris – During a meeting in Paris, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has told Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende that he will support the Netherlands if it comes under attack because of the anti-Qur’an film Fitna by populist leader Geert Wilders.
Dutch Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen has asked Dutch ambassadors in Islamic countries to do their best to protect Dutch citizens and companies. Pakistan has also brought the issue to the attention of the European Union and the Vatican. At Islamabad’s request, the matter has been placed at the top of the agenda at next week’s summit of the Organisation of Islamic Conference in Senegal.
There have been new demonstrations against the Netherlands and Denmark in Afghanistan. Dutch flags were burned in a number of cities. The website on which Mr Wilders’ film can be viewed has been online since this morning. So far, there is only a picture of a Qur’an along with the text: ‘Geert Wilders presents Fitna – Coming Soon.’
