Netherlands protests treatment of journalist

The Netherlands has registered a protest with the Israeli authorities over the treatment of a Palestinian journalist. The Israeli ambassador has promised Foreign Minister Maxime Verhagen that he will investigate the matter.

The journalist, Mohammed Omer, says that he was harshly treated following his arrest at the border between Jordan and the West Bank. He was on his way back from London, where he had attended a prize-giving ceremony. He says that the people who arrested him forced him to strip and hand over his suitcase, then squirted a pepper spray in his face. As a consequence he was admitted to hospital in Jericho.

Hans van Baalen, an MP for the VVD party who also calls himself a friend of Israel, was extremely angry when he heard about the incident and asked Minister Verhagen to make an official complaint.
