Madagascar to hold elections next year

Madagascar’s new President Andry Rajoelina, who seized power last month, says he plans to hold presidential elections in October 2010. Delegates attending a two-day conference in the capital Antananarivo agreed to a constitutional referendum this year, followed by parliamentary elections in March 2010.

It is not clear if Mr Rajoelina, who is 34, will run for president, since the constitutional age limit for the presidency is 40. The conference was boycotted by the party of ousted President Marc Ravalomanana, who has fled to Swaziland. He was vowed to return to Madagascar in the near future.
