Malawi opposition leader refuses to step down

The leader of the Malawi Congress Party, Malawi’s main opposition party, has rejected an appeal by senior party members to step down and accept Tuesday’s election results. John Tembo lost last week’s race against incumbent President Bingu wa Mutharika by a wide margin. The opposition leader accused the president of rigging the poll and said he would challenge the results in court.

Many party leaders are calling on Mr Tembo to congratulate President Mutharika on his victory and resign as party leader. The Electoral Commission says the president received around 2.7 million votes, more than twice as many as Mr Tembo’s 1.2 million.
