National poet elected in the Netherlands

Ramsey Nasr has been voted National Poet of the Netherlands. The winner of the internet vote was announced live on television on Wednesday evening. Mr Nasr follows in the footsteps of Driek van Wissen, Gerrit Komrij and Simon Vinkenoog. A total of 19,600 people cast their vote. All poets were allowed to enter, but a jury of experts drew up a shortlist of suitable candidates.

Ramsey Nasr is poet, author, actor and director. His first collection of poems 27 Poems and No Song was published in 2000. In 2005, he was city poet for Antwerp in Belgium.

The election which is held every four years is organised by Poetry International, The Royal Dutch Library, NPS broadcasting organisation, daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad and the Poetry Club.
