Lubbers wants Queen’s Day to continue

Speaking on the television programme Buitenhof, former prime minister Ruud Lubbers said that the failed attack on the royal family in Apeldoorn should not result in the end of the Queen’s Day celebrations. Mr Lubbers said the head of state should continue to remain visible. He was referring not just to Queen Beatrix but also to her son and successor Prince Willem-Alexander.

Mr Lubbers went on to suggest that the succession to the throne would be an opportune moment to turn a page and involve fewer members of the royal family in events such as Queen’s Day.

He called recent speculation about an early abdication by Queen Beatrix premature and said such a move could easily wait a few years.
